The moment after I decided to start Semper Pot Pie, and my dear friend Brittany from Busiest Beehive put my information up on her page, Tiffany Orner was my very first follower. She messaged me and let me know that she had a son name Jonathon stationed on Okinawa island at Camp Schwab. It was still 3 or 4 months before I would arrive on island and Tiffany kept in contact, encouraging me every step of the way. When I finally did arrive on island and I finally got to cook our first meal and deliver it, Jonathon and one other marine were my only deliveries. So today we would like to spotlight Jonathon Orner.
Meet Jonathon, the oldest of his siblings, born on November 10th he was destined to embrace the military legacy. For those of you who don’t know, the 10th of November is also the birthday of the Marine Corps. So did he really have a choice?
From playing on the basketball court to conquering video games, Jonathon was always up for a challenge, especially when it came to tormenting his younger brother. Since the 5th grade, Jonathon knew he wanted to join the military. Originally he had wanted to join the Navy. But the dream metamorphosed into his current reality, a U.S. Marine.
His journey officially began on 2/22/22 (isn’t that an awesome date to start a legacy?) when he left for boot camp, proudly carrying that dream.
As a family deeply rooted in military tradition, the news of Jonathon’s enlistment filled them with pride. Jonathon chose to specialize as a data systems administrator (MOS 0671) and completed his training in 29 Palms.
The twists continued as he received orders for Okinawa, leaving his family both sad and excited for the experience he was about to gain. Despite the challenges and the distance from his family, Jonathon has expressed a desire to at least hit the rank of sergeant during his military career. Will this change later on? Who knows. But for now, that is the goal.
Now a year into his stay in Okinawa, the countdown to his return in winter 2025 has begun. The family, while missing him, looks forward to the stories and growth he’ll bring back.
While Jonathon doesn’t have a favorite meal, he has developed a love for Mexican food. A family favorite, his grandma’s cubed steak with gravy is something the entire family misses. There is no recipe sadly, and unfortunately, Jonathon never got to taste this family favorite due to his grandmother’s passing.
As Jonathon continues his military journey, each day becomes a chapter in the story of a young Marine, leaving footprints on foreign shores but always carrying the essence of home.
While his family misses him and is counting down until he is again stationed stateside, we at Semper Pot Pie will be very sad when the day comes that Jonathon is no longer a part of our regular deliveries. Not only was he our very first client, he is one of our very favorites and we look forward to seeing his smiling face every week!
